Teach Teachers How to Create Magic

My first thought about this TED talk is that I relate. I have observed both types of teachers - the ones with "the magic" and the ones without. A teacher having the ability to hold the classrooms attention makes all the difference in how the learning experience is for the students. I agree that teaching "magic" is something every student with an education major desperately need. For me personally, lacking the ability to interest my future students while teaching is something that I am terrified of. Education professors need to understand that education students learning the "magic of teaching" is just as important as learning the content. As education majors, we are constantly reminded by professors that principles of schools are going to want that "above and beyond teacher" for their school who can engage a classroom like no other, but rarely do they teach you specifically how to do that. We know that this "magic" is definitely not from only knowing content up one side and down the other, but it is something much more. So why is the majority of the emphasis placed on the content while in college?

It is interesting to me that he mentions observing pastors, because my dad is a pastor. I have heard hundreds of preachers from all walks of life throughout my life and I have noticed some of the methods they use to hold the attention of an audience. I have never thought much about taking note of what preachers do to help me become a good teacher. It makes a lot of sense though. I have noticed that preachers are great at gaining attention at the right moment with the right method, but I know that this comes with experience My dad has been a pastor for over 20 years and he is great at this.

We should always be aware of those we come in contact with who have the ability to capture the attention of their audience. They might be found where you least expect it.
