Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education - 4/2/20

"Let's use video to reinvent education"

I found this video to be exciting for the future of education and for my future classroom. Salman Khan, who created Khan Academy, an online learning platform, shares the information that he has gathered about the impact of switching the time and place of lectures and homework for students.

I immediately connected to his idea of doing online lectures for students and then using the class time for doing homework and asking questions. Since we have been quarantined for Covid-19, I have had a few online lectures and it is shocking how much more I grasp a subject or concept when I have the freedom to pause and re-watch parts of the lecture. I have been able to take more thorough notes and I have been pleasantly surprised at how much pressure it has taken off of me to not have to scribble down notes as fast as I can and ask the teacher to repeat what was said many times. I never feel like I can get it all. This was one of the topics of discussion in this TED Talk. Salman mentioned that many students struggle with mastering each concept in a class and in trying to move on to the next topic. Having a program where students can keep working freely until they master a concept is a beneficial thing for students. There is no way for a teacher in the classic setup, to be able to keep up with what every student still needs work on, but with the Khan Academy structure, they can manage how each the student is doing and help the ones who need it.

Opening up class time for doing homework, asking questions and having interaction with the teacher and other students is great concept as well. It definitely would take some of the pressure off of the students and their homework because they know that if they get stuck on anything, they have the teacher near to help. I have experienced this in one of my math classes and it was very beneficial to me. I am not comfortable with Math and my teacher was able to answer my questions as I went through the homework.

I truly like the ideas that Salman shared about making the class experience as beneficial as it can be for the students. He has received a lot of excellent feedback from using videos to teach because it is so versatile for students of all ages, even adults who need help with their education. It also would be helpful for those who have gaps in what they learned from previous grades.

All around, it would be a great concept for any and all classes to try, especially ones with struggling students. I truly believe that it could create a genuinely more positive learning experience for students, just in the little experience I have had with this type of learning.
