Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity? - 4/30/20

"Do schools kill creativity?"

This was an awesome and genuine discussion about what creativity is and how important it is in our education system. Ken explains that by putting the main emphasis on math and literature in school and belittling creativity, our world is missing out on the talents and abilities that kids have to offer. Kids are unafraid of being wrong and so they can express amazing ideas without being held back, but when schools emphasize academic ability, kids are, as he puts it, are being educated out of their creativity.

We don't think much about the fact that so many people have talents other than math and English, and science, but never fully get to express these or live them out. This is because what they were good at was belittled and pushed to the side in school. Like Ken says, Intelligence is diverse. There is not only one way to be brilliant. People from all walks of life, backgrounds, countries, interests, etc. can be brilliant in their own way and through their individual talent that they were born with. The main takeaway from this in my mind is that school executives and teachers need to be aware of, respect, and nourish children's nature capacity for creative greatness, even if it doesn't look like a perfect score on a math test.
