"Help for Kids the Education System Ignores"
The message behind this TED talk is powerful and is desperately needed in our country right now. There are countless children and teens who have given up on themselves and have had no one to believe in them and prove that they do. Believing in those who don't believe in themselves is like that old saying, "Actions speak louder than words." It must be shown, not only told. This was true of Victor's situation. His teacher actually showed up for him, when he needed it most. I can't help but believe that there have been so many teens that could have been reached, who were not, just because someone in their life didn't take the time to step up for them. It may have been parents, friends, or teachers who neglected to do it, but I know that I don't want to be one. I think that this message has given me an awareness and a reminder to step up for people, even though they might seem like a lost cause, because no one is truly a lost cause. As a future teacher, I want to make that impact like Mrs. Russ did for Victor. I don't want to lose a student because I wasn't there for them, and I want to understand what my students need and when they need it. This takes effort, discernment, and a true care for the students. Its always important to remember that no matter how far gone someone seems, he or she still have so much to offer. I have realized, first hand, that there is usually more going on on the inside of someone than what meets the eye. A person may feel completely different than what they convey or speak.
I applaud the fact that Mrs. Russ respected Victor's story and the struggles he had faced. She helped him see the good that was already apart of his story. This goes along with the other point that Victor made about getting rid of cultural stereotypes and the assumption that kids are "at risk' just because they come from a certain background and treating them that way. All students should have respect from the ones who are in charge of them and who are making decisions that impact their lives, like in the school system. This is this a critical aspect for students getting what they need to succeed.
